The crossing in short

The ferry from Hirtshals in Denmark to Larvik in Norway takes 3 hrs 45 min and sails one to three times a day, all year round. Color Line is the only operator, using SuperSpeed 2. Fares start at €53 per person with a car and €107 with a motorhome. Larvik is 135 km from Oslo, about 1 hr 40 min on the E18.

Hirtshals is on the northern tip of Jutland, Larvik on the Vestfold coast in southern Norway, with the Skagerrak between them.

Three things decide how the trip works out: how you reach Hirtshals, whether Larvik is the right arrival port for your destination in Norway, and what the fare comes to once the date and your vehicle are fixed. Each has its own page below.

Is Larvik the right port for you?

Larvik is particularly convenient for Oslo, Vestfold, Telemark and eastern Norway. No other crossing from Hirtshals arrives within 135 km of Oslo.

Six ferry services sail from Hirtshals to four Norwegian ports: Larvik, Kristiansand, Stavanger and Bergen. For destinations in western Norway, the crossings to Stavanger and Bergen take longer at sea but land you much closer, which removes a long drive west from Larvik.

The route comparison sets out crossing times, frequency and onward driving distance for all six.
